Suggestions for Web Site Improvements/Features
Posted: 21 Oct 2004 10:59 PM
We are collecting suggestions for changes/features for the next update to the site. So if anyone has any new features that they think would be of benefit to the site feel free to post them here.

Book reviews and Job postings are two suggestions that have been mentioned in the past.

Go on tell us what you'd like to see...

Change "Biographies" to "User List", or something along those lines. Biographies sounds way to American ;)

Script Library - or would this be classed as "Resources"

FAQ Section

Glossary - Something to explain all those confusing acronyms like ASSUG :)

Maillist discussion

Thanks

With the External Links page, can the links be organised to use up the space better. Currently there is a lot of wasted space. Maybe they could be catergorised as per Articles, News, etc...

Also, can the "Add External Link" be shifted to the top?

Thanks
Phill

1) Area which makes it easy for members to Find & Recommend SQL Tools. I see this as :-
1.1) Someone able to post a Product Name, Company Name & URL to more details.
1.2) This should not be annoymus. The name of the SQL Member & their company name should be visible (to show any obvious conflict of interest) (thoughts on this?)
1.3) Other users should then be able to RATE this product & post comments on their own experience with it.

2) Area to Find & Recommend SQL Text Books.
2.1) Should have a flag to state if you think this book is the "Bible" for that subject area.
2.2) Include a Link to Amazon, Barnes & Noble or similar to see screen shot of text etc.

3) Area to enhance employment contacts.
3.1) Potential Employers can post "Work Required" information. Need sections to Potential Employees, Contracting Jobs &/or Consultant work.
3.2) Employees chould post "Jobs Required" (inc CV is desired)
3.3) Contractors & Consultant Companies could post that they are available too. This group should have a Filter on Areas they cover (eg: SQL BI, SQL Managment etc). Also should be able to have RATING system by past employers.

4) Enhance our Links system. SO the we can group them better. EG: Links to other SQL Specialist sites. Links into specific areas of Interest within Microsoft site (sometimes hard to find stuff up there), maybe Temporary Links to Events like TECH-ED USA or PASS etc. (Unsure about this)

5) Lists of Newsgroups & a "How to Connect to a Newsgroup" text

6) User defined Profile, So you can personalise your default view to "These States" & National Events (like Tech-Ed Aust or the Yukon Launch conference (if MS does one))

7) SQL Training
7.1) Links to CTECs who are running SQL Courses.
7.2) Links to Web sites with Webcasts (Live &/or On-Demand)
7.3) Cool -White papers

8) Resources
Split this into :-
A) PPT's (+ Demo Scripts etc) from a SQL User group meeting.
B) Other stuff people want to post. (Perhaps T-SQL Templates, As-Is SQL Utilities, White papers etc.

9) Flag on Members list to Indicate their desired status within the community. Eg:-
- Help Run XYZ State SQL Group.
- Help Run / Develop SQL UG Web site
- Work for Microsoft
- Member
(Or something similar - Intent here is to help new people to community find thier way around) Unsure how useful this really is.

One suggestion that was mentioned to me at the last SIG was the ability to add an event to the Outlook calendar - see http://www.codeproject.com/useritems/vcalendarfiletodownload.asp or http://www.codeproject.com/vb/net/vcalendar.asp for sample code.

Possibly the ability to un-register for an event would be useful too.

Hey thomas,

It's a little wierd but we have the ability to add to outlook from the events section, but not from the registration page. It should be pretty easy to replicate this into the registration page so you can add the reminder at the time you register.

The site doesn't render that well in Firefox.. (after all, who'd be game to use IE these days!)

I think your CSS needs looking at, and also the ads aren't showing up (doesn't bother me, but might bother your sponsors!)

Dave

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll get one of the other guys to check out the Firefox rendering. I don't have it myself. I use Maxthon and IE when I have to ;)

With the ads, does Firefox have ad blocking functionality? I know Maxthon does and it blocks the ads.

Thanks
Phill

Firefox does have ad-blocking, but I haven't enabled it for sqlserver.com.au

The ads do actually work for the home page, but not for any other pages i've looked at.

Firefox thinks the URL for one of the images is

http://www.sqlserver.com.au/news/%5Cimages%5Csponsors%5Cwebcentral.gif

which is kind of weird. While not ruling out firefox as the culprit, it does seem more likely that there is a weird character or two on your page that is causing this effect.

I did notice that pointing the page at the W3C HTML validator came back with heaps of errors, so that may have something to do with it (looks like someone created a HTML document with XHTML elements - a bit of a mish-mash!)

I think the problem is that someone used the wrong kind of slashes..

\images\sponsors\webcentral.gif

should be /images/sponsors/webcentra.gif !!!!!

sorry, i meant the link to the image for the webcasts is broken on pages other than the home page - presumably the same problem as the other images had.

At our Feb 2005 Meeting a couple of other suggestions were noted.

1) When looking at an events details, there is no link to register. When I pointed out it is on the home page, the comment was made that he wanted to see what the session is about before deciding to register - a valid point...

2) Printing event details is problematic

Hi there I'm new to the site. My requests are pretty simple
1) When does the User group meet
2) Where does the User group meet
3) When is the next meeting?

Meetings are generally once a month. At different times for each state. Check the home page for forthcoming meetings.

You can also, look at when older meetings were held by clicking the "Read Older Events" link on the home page.

Thanks
